Botsalano Game Reserve

Situated on the Botswana border and on the edge of the Kalahari, some 36km from Mafikeng, it has gained a reputation as a fertile breeding ground for the white rhino.

Botsalano Game Reserve is the site of one of the oldest volcanic craters in the world that extends through the park into Botswana.

The game reserve essentially breeds antelope and other mammals to stock reserves in South Africa. The 5 800 hectare Botsalano Game reserve is mainly Kalahari thornveld and wide open grasslands with smatterings of acacia and karee woodlands.

Cooke's Lake and Ponds

For the less adventurous, this is a popular bird life sanctuary located on the outskirts of town.
Cookes Lake is next to Mafikeng and is located in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

The Lotlamoreng Dam and Nature Reserve


 Lotlamoreng Dam and Nature Reserve is next to Matlhonyane and is located in North-West, South AfricaThe complex offers a demarcated waterfowl sanctuary, a designated recreational area and a cultural village site.

Mafikeng Game Reserve

The 4,800 hectare Mafikeng Game Reserve is composed of Kalahari and Acacia bushveld with bountiful plains game viewing as its main attraction.
The entrance to the Mafikeng Game Reserve is through the main gate off Jacaranda Drive in Mahikeng. When visiting Mahikeng, be sure to include this attractive park into your itinerary. The principal circuit takes only 2 hours and is a most rewarding game viewing experience.
